El proyecto más significativo, llevado a cabo a comienzos del siglo anterior, para el desarrollo de la región conformada por Ocaña-Aguachica- Gamarra (Norte de Santander y Cesar, respectivamente) y sus áreas de influencia, a pesar de las protestas que realizó la comunidad por su construcción, iniciada en la administración del Presidente Pedro Nel Ospina y terminado en el de Miguel Abadía Méndez, fue este importante medio de transporte de pasajeros y carga. La obra fue emprendida por los Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Colombia a finales de 1925 y concluida en 1929, permaneciendo oficialmente al servicio hasta 1945 (para pasajeros) y su paralización en 1947 (hasta este año se movilizó carga) al darse plenamente el tránsito vehicular entre Aguachica y Ocaña, cuya carretera se inauguró el 15 de julio de 1947. Una vez desmontada la estructura de El Cable, la sección perteneciente a Aguachica fue vendida a Julio Z. Álvarez S. por la suma de $70.000.oo, siendo Alcalde del Municipio Juan Romano Marún.
