Este artigo aborda o tema da autodeterminação dos povos originários Charruas, do Uruguai, tendo como problemática o não reconhecimento da Convenção n° 169, da Organização Internacional do Trabalho – OIT, por aquele Estado soberano. Tem-se como hipótese que o não reconhecimento desse tratado internacional agrava o descaso em relação à singularidade da cultura Charrua na formação da nação uruguaia. A abordagem desta pesquisa bibliográfica e documental é qualitativa e descritiva. Conclui-se que os indivíduos descendentes da etnia Charrua são dignos do direito de autodeterminação e que necessitam de políticas públicas nas diversas áreas do desenvolvimento humano.This article examines ab the issue of self-determination of the original Charruas peoples of Uruguay, having as a problem the non-recognition of Convention nº 169, of the International Labour Organization – ILO, by that sovereign State. It is hypothesized that the non-recognition of this international treatment aggravates the disregard for the uniqueness of the Charrua culture in the formation of the Uruguayan nation. The approach of this bibliographical and documentary research is qualitative and descriptive. It was concluded that individuals descending from the Charrua ethnic group are worthy of the right to self-determination and that they have undergone public policies in the various areas of human development.
