This article is the result of a bibliographical and documentary investigation that seeks to present developments on the impacts that colonization has had on the history and culture of the peoples of Latin America. We aim to reflect on the influence that the colonization project had on the structures and life systems of the people who inhabited these lands. Through this investigation, it is evident that the worldview of indigenous peoples has suffered marked external influences, due to the domination, violence and oppression of the colonizer. The subsystems and identities that have been created over the centuries, show how the cultural domination of colonizing projects still remains with hegemonic and monocultural predominance. Therefore, revisiting the past becomes an ethical commitment in times when the struggle must be a constant in educational practices, to maintain the right to survival and permanence of the customs, beliefs, languages ​​and cultures of indigenous peoples in Latin America.O presente artigo é resultado de uma investigação bibliográfica e documental que busca apresentar desdobramentos sobre os impactos que a colonização causou na história e cultura dos povos originários na América Latina. Objetivamos refletir sobre a influência que o projeto de colonização causou nas estruturas e sistemas de vida dos povos que habitavam essas terras. Através desta investigação, evidencia-se que a cosmovisão dos povos indígenas sofreu influências externas marcantes, devido à dominação, violência e opressão do colonizador. Os subsistemas e as identidades que foram criados ao longo dos séculos, evidenciam como a dominação cultural dos projetos colonizadores ainda permanecem com predominância hegemônica e monocultural. Sendo assim, revisitar o passado se torna um compromisso ético em tempos que a luta deve ser uma constante nas práticas educativas, para manter o direito à sobrevivência e permanência dos costumes, crenças, idiomas e culturas dos povos indígenas na América Latina.
