This article presents an analysis about the municipalization in the municipality of Itabaiana, Sergipe. This study was based on the historiography strand, History of Present Time, in the field of History of Education. It was investigated how the municipality organized to guarantee the offer of the education between the period of 1988 to 2014. This temporal cut includes the promulgation of the Federal Constitution of 1988, consolidated by Law 9,394 / 96 that establishes the Guidelines and Bases of National Education. This work is organized in two movements to understand the process of municipalization: in the first, we sought to identify and analyze the distribution of the municipal school network, the possible financing programs created to contemplate the municipal education network, the relationship between the municipal network and the state, the forms of selection and continuous formation of teachers, the methodologies of pedagogical organization of the municipal network and the use of the public resources destined to the education; in the second, we sought to analyze school performance and to correlate with school failure, as well as the association of this first theme with the question of gender through the connection with the locality. The methodological procedures adopted to make possible the study were the contacts with the Municipal Department of Education, the readings and analyzes of the existing documentation, visits to the school units, consultation with the Federal Government statistical data. At the end of this article, it was hoped to contribute to the municipality itself obtaining a better reflection on its practices and in which points this can achieve changes that provided improvements in the service provided to the populationO presente artigo realiza uma análise sobre a municipalização do ensino no município de Itabaiana, Sergipe. Este estudo baseou-se na vertente da historiografia, História do Tempo Presente, no campo da História da Educação. Investigou-se como a municipalidade se organizou para garantir a oferta da educação entre o período de 1988 a 2014. Este recorte temporal compreende a promulgação da Constituição Federal de 1988, consolidada pela Lei 9.394/96 que estabelece as Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional. Este trabalho está organizado em dois movimentos para entender o processo de municipalização: no primeiro, buscou-se identificar e analisar a distribuição da malha escolar municipal, os possíveis programas de financiamento criados para contemplar a rede municipal de educação, a relação entre a rede municipal e estadual, as formas de seleção e formação continuada de professores, as metodologias de organização pedagógica da rede municipal e o uso dos recursos públicos destinados à educação; no segundo, buscou-se analisar o rendimento escolar e o correlacionar com o fracasso escolar e, também, a associação deste primeiro tema com a questão de gênero por meio da conexão com a localidade. Os procedimentos metodológicos adotados para tornar possível o estudo foram os contatos com a Secretaria Municipal de Educação, as leituras e análises da documentação existente, visita as unidades escolares, consulta aos dados estatísticos do Governo Federal.
