In order to awaken the interest of high school students from schools in the municipalities near the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) for science, to identify new talents for Genetics, to encourage students who are completing high school to continue studying, to promote interaction between the university and community, to allow undergraduates and postgraduates of UFLA refine their knowledge of genetics and develop skills in teaching this subject, the present study was conducted. The interaction between UFLA with high school was accomplished through lectures in some schools, focusing on the 60th anniversary of the discovery of DNA molecule structure. Afterwards, high school students visited the University and took part in several activities, all focusing on teaching/learning genetics. At the end a questionnaire was applied to evaluate the methodology used for teaching/learning. A total of 12 schools participated in the activities, with approximately 2000 students, and it was shown that it is possible to motivate the interest in the subject. The methodology of teaching/learning was excellent, in which over than 80% of participants scored higher than 60% in the resolution of the questionnaire. It was also found that the experience acquired by UFLA’s undergraduates and postgraduates in coexistence with high school students was huge.Com o objetivo de despertar o interesse dos estudantes do Ensino Médio das escolas dos municípios próximos à Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) para a ciência, identificar novos talentos para a Genética, estimular os estudantes que estão terminando o Ensino Médio para continuar estudando, promover a interação da universidade e a comunidade, permitir que os estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação – UFLA aperfeiçoem os seus conhecimentos de genética e desenvolvam habilidades no ensino da disciplina, foi realizado o presente trabalho. A interação UFLA/Ensino Médio foi realizada por meio de palestras nas escolas, dando ênfase aos 60 anos da descoberta da estrutura da molécula de DNA. Posteriormente, os estudantes visitaram a universidade e participaram de atividades lúdicas, todas tendo como foco o ensino/aprendizado em genética. Ao final, foi aplicado um questionário visando avaliar a metodologia de ensino/aprendizado utilizada. Participaram das atividades 12 escolas, com, aproximadamente, 2.000 alunos e ficou evidenciado que é possível motivar o interesse pela disciplina. A metodologia de ensino/aprendizado foi excelente, tendo mais de 80% de participantes com acertos de mais de 60% na resolução das questões formuladas. Constatou-se também que a experiência adquirida pelos graduandos e pós-graduandos da UFLA na convivência com os estudantes do Ensino Médio foi enorme.
