This research aims to identify groups that create types of credit unions based on the characteristics of corporate governance adopted by these associations. For that, it uses data from the survey on governance applied by the Central Bank of Brazil, in the period 2013/2014. In methodological terms, the research is particularly descriptive with a quantitative approach, and uses the multivariate cluster analysis technique to analyze the results. The main findings indicate the existence of two clusters in the 994 cooperatives studied. Among the main characteristics, there is that the Minor IGOC cluster is made up of 65% of the sample and has a low level of governance, while the Major IGOV cluster is composed of 35% of the sample and reflects an average level of governance. From the results it appears that the cooperatives have low and medium levels of governance, it is not possible to classify them as high level in relation to the governance practices developed.A presente pesquisa objetiva identificar agrupamentos que permitam criar tipologias de cooperativas de crédito com base nas características da governança corporativa. Para tanto, utilizou-se dos dados da pesquisa sobre governança aplicada pelo Banco Central do Brasil, no período de 2013/2014. Em termos metodológicos, a pesquisa caracteriza-se como descritiva com abordagem quantitativa, e utiliza-se da técnica multivariada de análise de clusters para a análise dos resultados. Os principais achados indicam a existência de dois clusters nas 994 cooperativas estudadas. Entre as principais características, tem-se que o cluster Tipo A é formado por 65% da amostra e apresenta um baixo nível de governança, enquanto que o cluster Tipo B é composto por 35% da amostra e reflete um nível médio de governança. A partir dos resultados constata-se que as cooperativas possuem baixos e médios níveis de governança, não sendo possível classificá-las como de alto nível em relação as práticas de governança desenvolvidas.
