This work analyzes the issue of violence in the chronicles written by Machado de Assis between 1876 and 1878 and entitled ‘History of fifteen days’. From the theoretical contributions of Bourdieu and Ginzburg, the text demonstrates how the chronicler highlights the symbolic violence relations inserted within his text. The goal is to reveal the oppression of the elite towards slaves and the minor classes. From the reading and analysis of these texts, it is possible to show the violent nature of the society of Rio de Janeiro in the last quarter of the 19th century.O trabalho analisa a questão da violência no ciclo de crônicas machadianas intitulada ‘História de quinze dias’, escritas entre 1876 e 1878. Utilizando aportes teóricos provenientes de Bourdieu e Ginzburg, o texto demonstra como o cronista destaca as relações de violência simbólica inseridas dentro de seu texto, revelando, desta forma, a opressão da elite face os escravos e agregados. A partir da leitura e análise desses textos, é possível descortinar a natureza violenta da sociedade carioca do último quartel do século XIX.
