The elaboration of absence is the best way to explain the metaphor expressed in the title of the novel The archipelago of insomnia, by António Lobo Antunes (1998). Descriptions of photographs have in the text an important role in the restoration of mnemonic representations. The objectives of this analysis are directed to the reflections about the technique of condensing of the presence in the absence, through the image resources. Lobo Antunes presents the text a photographic collection that stimulates, by the fiction, the perception and the memory. It was verified as the narrative techniques are employed in the fictionalization of photographic images and what is their potential to enable the skills and memory limitations.A elaboração da ausência constitui um dos recursos que compõem a metáfora expressa no título do romance O arquipélago da insônia, de autoria de António Lobo Antunes (1998). As descrições de fotografias desempenham um importante papel na restauração de representações mnemônicas. Os propósitos desta análise estão alinhados às reflexões referentes à técnica de condensar a presença na ausência, possibilitada pelos recursos imagéticos. Lobo Antunes constrói no texto um acervo fotográfico que estimula, por meio da ficção, a percepção e a lembrança. Verificaremos, assim, como as técnicas narrativas são empregadas na ficcionalização de imagens fotográficas e qual é o seu potencial para ativar as faculdades e limitações da memória.
