Political education and its role in higher education in Colombia, as a fundamental piece in the consolidation of democracy, is proposed to the citizen as an instrument to form his intellect, his historical conscience and his common sense to launch him to action. The purpose of this research is to recognize that from the classroom, the processes of higher education can form the political subject for democratic participation and political action from higher and university education. In this order of ideas, an understanding was made around the tensions and debates of the history of education in political formation in the last 20 years in Colombia, the comprehension of a conceptual framework that bases the role of political formation, the analysis of the legal postulates of education in Colombia from the law 30 of 1992 about the public service of education and the general law of education of 1994 in the key of the political Constitution of 1991 in articles 67, 69, 70 and 71, with the purpose of considering some results and recommendations that allow understanding and strengthening the role of higher education in political formation.
