Resumen
The present work has as its object of research the Quintet for oboe and string quartet WoO 17
(Quinett für Streichquartett und Oboe), the first work for oboe by the Swiss-Brazilian
composer Ernst Widmer (1927-1990). Composed in Switzerland in 1951, it belongs to
Widmer’s period of compositional youth and is among the works without an opus number in
his collection, being cataloged in 2008 by Willy Brüschweiler as WoO (Werke ohne
Opuszhal) (BRÜSCHVEILER, 2008, p. 67). The Quintet WoO 17 is one of the five audiocomplements
of a radio series called Frühvollendete, commissioned and premiered by Radio
DRS of Switzerland between 1950 and 1951. The Quintet WoO 17 makes reference to the
comic play Leonce and Lena of 1836 by German Georg Büchner (1813-1837). Composed of
six movements, this chamber work also has in its fifth movement an ad libitum line for voice,
in which Widmer introduces the text of the piece's Tanz Lied. This research aims to
disseminate, introduce and insert the Quintet WoO 17 into the chamber music repertoire for
oboe and strings. For this, an introductory descriptive analysis of the movements will be
carried out, observing their structure, compositional elements, influences and
interrelationships, and a later work by Widmer that has thematic relationships with the
Quintet WoO 17 will be presented, the edited score of the works. It is also expected that this
research will contribute to the dissemination of a compositional phase of Ernst Widmer still little explored.
