Abstract
This work presents the design and implementation of a boost converter applied to the
maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of a solar photovoltaic panel. The converter operates in
CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode), with input voltage of 17.56V (from a 10 W solar
photovoltaic panel). The method of power point tracking is based on the P&O (perturb and
observe) algorithm. The design of proposed converter – determination of semiconductor
devices, output capacitor and boost inductor – are detailed addressed. The digital control is
implemented in an Arduino Mega 2560 platform. Further, the design and implementation of
an instrumentation circuit, responsible for interfacing the current and voltage sensors with the
analog-digital converters of the microcontroller – are presented. Finally, the design of an
auxiliary voltage source (flyback converter), responsible for sourcing the control and
instrumentation circuits is addressed. To validate the project and the MPPT algorithm, it has
been used the photovoltaic array emulator Keysight E4360A.
