Resumen
Within Physical Education and Motor Learning, tests are considered important tools for
appraising efficiency in the learning-teaching process and an important element to verify the
improvement of motor performance concerning any motor skills. The aims of this study were
the building, validation and application of a test to measure performance results out of the
butterfly swim. To build it, the theoretical references by Machado (1978), Counsilman (1984),
Palmer (1990), Maglischo (1999) and Colwin (2000) were used. The swimming technique
was split in five sections, body movement, legs movement, arms movement, respiration and
synchronization. Afterwards, the tool was sent to referees for validation. Following their
suggestions, the test was then reformulated. The test was applied to 41 students from three
Swimming Schools in Santa Maria - RS, who had already started learning this swim style. To,
according to Pellegrini (2000), assort them across learning levels, Multivariate Analysis
techniques were applied through SPSS Statistical Package, version 11.0. The results showed
that 41% of the students ranked on the 3rd level (expert); 34%, on the 2nd level (intermediary);
and 24%, on the 1st level (unskilled). The building and validation of this tool might be useful
within pedagogic situations, provided it helps swimming teachers with the classification and
evaluation of their students’ technical evolution, as well as with the scientific surveys
inquiring elements of the butterfly swim technique.
