Resumen
From stories about the existence of a concentration camp in Itaqui city, in the countryside of Rio
Grande do Sul, during the civil-military 1964’s dictatorship, this paper was developed in order to
understand the real circumstances of the 1964 Coup in the city and the events that followed it.
Before studying specifically Itaqui city, all the Brazilian conjuncture of the period previous to the
coup though the National Security Ideology is analyzed, from the coup forces positioning and
from the events previous to that historic moment in national range. The present paper analyses
the events before 1964 in Itaqui in order to understand what could have led to the construction
camp in this city. And there were found the existence of two strong movements from the left in
that time: the Agricultural Patrol and the student’s movement. People connected to both
movements were arrested, after the coup, being taken to a prison in the back of the headquarter,
which was could a concentration camp by the local people, due to the similarities whit the stories
of the concentration camps of World War II. However the necessary characteristics to be called a
concentration camp were not attended in this prison. It was the popular imagination that
understood the prison as it. This paper has its basis in the Military Police Inquiry, which accused
the prisoners of subversion, and in the oral interviews done whit some of these prisoners and with
a member of the community.
