Resumen
This final paper presents the development of a virtual real-time high impedance fault
model for the Typhoon HILs real-time simulators toolchain. High impedance faults are
very common events in overhead distribution systems and occurs when there is contact
between an energized conductor and a surface with high electric resistance. However,
this events are difficult to detect by common protection functions, requiring specially
designed algorithms for its detection. Since HIFs have characteristics that distinguish
them of the other faults, it is also necessary to model these events in order to develop
the correct design of protective functions. In view of the advantages of real-time simulation tools combined with the almost abscence of HIF models in simulations library,
this work proposes the development of a virtual model for the HIL Control Center,
the Typhoon HILs real-time simulators toolchain. For this, a HIF model proposed by
Gautam and Brahma (2013) is implemented chosen for its wide dissemination in the
academic environment combined with an easy execution by simulators. With the model implemented, it is validated through comparative analysis with the same model and
test system implemented in the ATP Draw simulator. Finally, the HIF hardware-in-theloop (HIL) detection tests are performed using the SEL-751 relay, a feeder protection
relay from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.
