School Boards as a tool for encouraging participation in democratic management in
Brazilian public schools is the subject of this study, which focuses on the literature to
elucidate can be realized as the process of setting up and / or reactivation of School
Board. Discuss the concepts of participation and democratic management of
education in the context of Brazilian education. Then the School Board is presented
as one possible tool for the democratic process is built as part of educational
management, regate with a brief history of the emergence of the councils as
representative bodies to the popular format of the boards in school management in
the way they are established today. The study showed that the guarantee of
democracy in school management as noted in the legislation, however it is necessary
that it be achieved in daily school life, overcoming the paternalistic Brazilian heritage.
In this context, the School Boards presents an opportunity for the development of
effective participation in the school environment contributes to the implementation of democracy.
