Resumen
The Brazilian rail transport segment has received large investments and has undergone
regulatory changes to increase the share of rail in cargo transportation in Brazil and reduce
existing logistical bottlenecks in the country. Concomitantly, the diffusion of the ESG agenda
over the last few years has reflected in an increase in the number of organizations that have
adopted sustainability strategies and started to report their ESG practices. The adoption of ESG
practices by organizations in the railway sector can contribute to the development of more
sustainable transport infrastructure, as well as the economic and social development of the
country. This paper aimed to analyze the ESG practices adopted by companies in the rail
transport segment in Brazil. For this, a theoretical foundation was carried out through
bibliographic research on ESG and corporate sustainability. A diagnosis of cargo transportation
in Brazil and the railroad sector in the current scenario was also made. Then, documentary
research was carried out to identify the ESG practices adopted by two companies in the rail
transportation segment in Brazil. The main ESG issues that affect the business model of
organizations operating in the rail transport segment were identified and a discussion was held
based on the evidence of ESG practices identified. The adoption of ESG practices can provide
benefits to organizations such as corporate risk mitigation, opportunities for fundraising,
legitimacy in the company's performance and more efficient operations.
