Resumen
In the current industrial context, it is possible to obtain advantages by establishing strategic
relationships with suppliers. From this, it is notable that the success of a company depends on
the ability to identify opportunities for improvement and to manage the relationships between
the various members that make up the supply chain. The development of new management
tools and methods, directed to the improvement and continuous improvement of the
performance level in face of the new demands, is part of the growth process. The objective of
this work is to improve the method of qualifying raw material suppliers of a metal-mechanic
industry in Cachoeira do Sul. This objective branches out in conducting a bibliographic review
of supplier qualification methods, identifying the fundamental characteristics to compose the
method. From this, and from the knowledge of the company's current scenario regarding the
supplier evaluation methodology, propose an improvement of the current method to calculate
the SQI (Supplier Qualification Index). Furthermore, the theoretical foundation covered
concepts related to supply chain management and supplier management and applied tools. The
adequacy of the methodology was supported on the indicators of punctuality, quality, and
relationship. The weights of the SQI calculation parameters defined for punctuality, quality,
and relationship were 30%, 50%, and 20%, respectively. The development was based on the
company's day-to-day situations, the author's experience, and the existing literature on the
subject. The SQI calculation is necessary to highlight the purchasing company where to put
efforts to improve its supplier base. All suppliers were considered for two months of input data.
With the application of the method, 5 suppliers were classified in level A, 8 with performance
compatible with level B, 12 performed in level C and 9 level D. The new methodology
presented significant results on the parameters of punctuality, quality and relationship, which
allowed guiding buyers and repairing suppliers.
