Resumen
The occurrence of foreign bodies (FB) in the clinic of small animals is routine, especially in dogs and cats with uncontrolled eating habits and puppies. In dogs the main occurrence of FB are bones and in cats are the occurrence of linear materials. Surgical removal is the effective method in the treatment of esophageal FB, with endoscopy being the technique of choice, but in some cases, thoracotomy with esophagotomy must be performed, since it presents the best results in surgical resolution. The aim of this study is to report the case of a two-year-old Labrador Retriever who was treated by the Ophthalmology and Microsurgery Sector of the University Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Maria (HVU-UFSM) and who had esophageal obstruction by foreign body. After the favorable diagnosis and complementary exams, the patient go through intercostal thoracotomy in the six intercostal space with esophagotomy, to remove the FB. Medicines for analgesia, anti-inflammatory and antibiotics were used, respectively: Dipyrone 25 mg/kg, TID, Tramadol Hydrochloride 4 mg/kg, TID, Meloxicam 0.1 mg/kg SID and Cephalotin 30 mg/kg BID, all by intravenous way. On the third postoperative day, the patient was discharged without complications. The same drugs were prescribed for use at home, only the antibiotic was changed to Cefalexin 30mg/kg, all by orally way. The surgical approach chosen for treatment was indicated by the size and location of the FB in the patient. Thus, it is concluded that the use of this technique provided greater well-being for the animal and showed excellent results in the return to normal activities.
