Resumen
Objectives: this study aims to determine the profile and analyze the quality of life of elderly
people undergoing hemodialysis in a Nephrology Clinic in Macapá.
Methods: We had 37 elderly patients go through a sociodemographic and clinical script using
the shortened quality of life assessment instrument. The data was tabulated and analyzed by
descriptive statistics. We then did a cross-sectional, descriptive study with a quantitative
approach.
Results: There was a higher prevalence of females, aged between 60-70 years, married, who
didn’t finish elementary school, had a monthly income of 1 minimum wage, retired, less than
1 year in hemodialysis and used an arteriovenous fistula. Whoqol-bref's physical domain
proved to be the most impaired, the self-assessment of quality of life was referred to as
regular and satisfaction with health, needing to improve.
Conclusion: This study identified that chronic kidney disease combined with hemodialysis
therapy most affected the quality of life of the elderly in the physical, environmental and
psychological domains, respectively. The domain of social relationships obtained the best
evaluation in terms of quality of life. In face of such findings, this scenario requires that the
health team that assists this population is equipped to guide actions and provide integral care,
aiming to elaborate a care plan that can ease the impacts of dialysis treatment, contributing to
a better quality of life for this population.
