Resumen
In university students there are factors that influence their academic development, among
them emotional intelligence and depression. Emotional intelligence is a set of skills to
perceive, value and express emotions, generate feelings that facilitate thinking, understand
emotion, and regulate emotions, own and others. Depression is characterized by feelings of
sadness, pessimism, dissatisfaction with oneself, loss of energy, motivation. This research
aims to determine what is the relationship between emotional intelligence and depression in
students of the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences of the University of Cuenca
during the period 2022. The population was 2004 students and a sample of 323 was
determined by simple random sampling with a margin of error of 5% and a confidence interval
of 95%. The research follows a quantitative, non-experimental, correlational and crosssectional
approach.
The
instruments
used
were
the
WLEIS-S
Emotional
Intelligence
Scale
and
the
Beck
Depression
Inventory.
As
for
the
results,
it
is
evident
that
high
levels
of
emotional
intelligence
predominate
with
67.5%
and
minimum
levels
of
depression
showing
in
39.3%
of
the
sample studied. It is concluded that students have adequate emotional intelligence
resources to manage academic stressors that influence the presence of depressive
symptoms.
