"Climate change has become a major problem for agricultural production, due to the climatic variations present in the places where corn is produced, one of the main crops. The objectives of this work were: To analyze the production of dry matter in the seedlings and the early vegetative development of nine maize populations in contrasting developing environments, and to analyze the interrelations of dry matter production with grain yield. The genetic material consisted of nine populations of corn and the crosses between them. The genotypes (populations and crosses) were subjected to evaluation trials in three stages: 1) Laboratory test to determine the physiological quality of the seeds under conditions with and without stress by salinity, 2) Greenhouse test to analyze the development in the early stage, with and without stress due to salinity, and 3) Evaluation test of the yield potential in the field. In the laboratory and greenhouse tests, an osmotic pressure of -1.25 Mpa was used for salinity stress conditions, using NaCl as a saline source. In the environments of the laboratory and greenhouse tests, the dry weight of the root system (PSR) and the dry weight of the aerial part or shoot (PSV) were determined; in the field the grain yield was determined. A scatter plot analysis was used to explore the interaction of genotypes × characters in environments. The genetic variation of the populations and crosses expressed by the characters under study give guidelines for genetic selection. In the environments (with and without stress due to salinity) in the laboratory tests, a reduction in the response of 49.0 and 60.0% was obtained for PSR and PSV, respectively. In general, a positive response of the crosses was obtained with respect to the populations of 11.0% in the grain yield; 4.1 and 6.0% in the PSR in the laboratory and greenhouse tests, respectively, as an indicator of genetic divergence and the average heterotic effects between them. Higher crosses in grain yield also show higher PSR values in the average crosses in the evaluation environments. In greenhouse trials, positive PSR and PSV relationship with and without stress was found with grain yield. The PSR and PSV under greenhouse stress conditions correlated positively with the data obtained from the physiological quality in the laboratory, but also, positive correlation was found with the grain yield, as the case of PSR with a correlation of r = 0.308 *. It is confirmed
that there is genetic variation among populations for the characters under study, which is manifested in the expression of the potential of the genetic combination in the crosses. It is possible to consider the dry weight of the root system determined under salinity stress conditions in the greenhouse, as an indicator with potential for the early selection of maize genotypes, which strengthens breeding strategies. The graphical dispersion analysis can be a complementary tool in the selection process of the correlated response, since the interaction of the genotypes with the combination of characters x evaluation environments is visually analyzed."
