Theoretical study on the sequential hydroxylation of C82 fullerene based on Fukui function

Background. Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has an important impact in public health with high morbidity and mortality. Prothrombotic and proinflammatory states are involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is the major inhibitor of the fibrinolysis and also is part of immune response. The-844 G>A gene polymorphism is related to increased PAI-1 protein levels. The aim of the study is to evaluate the association of-844 G>A PAI-1 polymorphism with ACS. Methods. A total of 646 individuals were recruited from Western Mexico: 350 unrelated healthy subjects and 296 patients with diagnosis of ACS. Results. The most important risk factor in our population was hypertension, followed by smoking. The genetic distribution showed an association of the A allele (OR = 1.27, P = 0.04) and AA genotype (OR = 1.86, P = 0.02) with ACS. The recessive model displayed similar results (OR = 1.76, P = 0.02). As additional finding, we observed significant differences in the genetic distribution of ACS dyslipidemic patients (OR = 1.99, P = 0.04). The A allele and AA genotype of-844 polymorphism of PAI-1 gene are risk factors for ACS. The AA genotype might be associated with the development of dyslipidemia in ACS patients. Landa-Jaime, V.",,"2000",,"The vertical distribution and abundance of conspicuous gastropod and bivalve species were studied at five rocky beaches in Cuastecomate Bay, Jalisco. Sampling was done from September, 1993 through March, 1994 with 0.75 m2 quadrants placed along replicate transect lines (10 m long) in the supralittoral and mesolittoral (upper, middle and lower intertidal) zones. A total of 6 643 mollusks were collected. Gastropods dominated the samples (6 272 individuals, 44 species); the bivalves were less abundant and diverse (371 individuals, five species). Seventeen species comprised 89.8% of all individuals collected. The gastropods Nodilittorina aspera and Nerita scabricosta were the most abundant with 637.8 and 71.43 individuals/m2, respectively. The most abundant bivalves were Brachidontes adamsianus and Chloromytilus palliopunctatus with 60.7 and 61.3 individuals/m2 respectively. The abundance of gastropods decreased from the supralittoral to the lower tidal zones while the number of species increased in the same direction. The number of species of bivalves also increased from the supralittoral to the lower intertidal zone; the abundance of individuals was higher at the middle intertidal zone. Affinities between groups of species among sampling stations were identified by computing Pearson's correlation coefficient using abundance values (ind./m2) and Jaccard's dissimilarity index using species presence or absence in the lower intertidal zone. Flores-Moreno, R.",,"2011",,"In the present work semi-empirical PM3 method and ab initio density-functional theory calculations were performed in carbon systems. The condensed Fukui function was calculated and HOMO-LUMO were visualised in order to study the sequence of hydroxylation of two isomers of C82 fullerene for the low coverage regime, with the formula C82(OH) x where x = 0 - 12. It was found that there was a formation of dangling bonds on structures with an odd number of hydroxyl groups on the fullerene surface, which suggests an enhanced reactivity of these molecules. Nevertheless, the coverings with an even number of groups tend to the reconstruction of bonds, obtaining less reactive molecular structures. With the adsorption of the first group, a narrow HOMO-LUMO gap (1.28 eV) is observed in comparison with the C82(OH)2 system (1.70 eV), as is found in similar systems, such as C60 fullerenol [E.E. Fileti et al., Nanotechnology 19, 365703 (2008); J.G. Rodríguez-Zavala and R.A. Guirado-López, Phys. Rev. B 69, 075411 (2004)]. Through an analysis of the electronic structure to these coverings, a splitting of electronic energy levels in the structure with one hydroxyl group is observed, which could be one of the factors that causes the narrowing of the energy gap in this structure. On the other hand, with a coverage of 12 hydroxyl groups, the formation of an amphiphilic molecule, where the location of groups in one side of the C 82 surface provides an hydrophilic character, is observed, while the uncovered part has an hydrophobic character. This could be important in the formation of Langmuir monolayers. Finally, it is shown that the precise distribution of the OH groups on the fullerene surface plays a crucial role in the electronic structure of the polyhydroxylated fullerenes.
