ABSTRACT: This work focuses on the study of phase transformations in the Fe-rich regions of the Fe-Ni-
Al and Fe-Ni-Al-Cr systems. For the study of the Fe-Ni-Al system a diffusion couple made of
alloys Fe0.75Ni0.10Al0.15 and Fe0.50Ni0.25Al0.25 was used. The diffusion couple was fabricated with
a diffusion annealing treatment at 1100°C for 4 days in an inert atmosphere. Afterwards it
was subject to an aging treatment at 900°C for 5 hours to promote second phase
precipitation. The chemical analysis made with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer indicates
that the compositional gradient has an extent of 700 μm and that interdiffusion has taken
place between both alloys.
The microstructural analysis made by High-Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy
(HR-SEM) shows that the fraction of precipitate phases, their morphology and distribution
change along the compositional gradient. By increasing the content of NiAl the morphology
change from spheres to rounded cuboids and ends in an irregular maze-like structure. This
irregular structure, present in compositions with Fe content below 60% suggest the
occurrence of a spinodal decomposition in compositions where the α/β’ relationship is close
to 1:1. The analysis with instrumented indentation indicates that the Young’s modulus
increases with higher NiAl content. The same trend could be observed in the Vickers
microhardness measurements. Both are caused by the fact that the NiAl intermetallic
presents a higher hardness and Young’s modulus than those of the α phase.
For the study of the Fe-Ni-Al-Cr system diffusion couples made of alloys
Fe0.75Ni0.10Al0.15 and Fe0.45Ni0.10Al0.15Cr0.30 were used. The series of diffusion couples were
fabricated with a diffusion annealing treatment for 7 days under inert atmosphere.
Afterwards the diffusion couples were subject to aging treatments at 850 and 900°C for 5,
25 and 50 hours to promote second phase precipitation. The chemical analysis by EDS
indicates that the compositional gradient has an extent close to 2000 μm, and that
interdiffusion took place. Microstructural characterization by HR-SEM indicate that the β’
phase is stable at 1100°C when the Cr content is close to 20% (at.). It was observed that,
during aging, a higher Cr content promotes a higher fraction of the β’ phase and a lower
coarsening resistance. Also, after prolonged aging, the β’ precipitates in Cr-rich alloys present
a partial loss in coherency and change to a spherical morphology.
For a detailed analysis of the loss of coherency in these conditions, three alloys with
fixed composition (Fe0.60Ni0.10Al0.15Cr0.15, Fe0.53Ni0.10Al0.15Cr0.22 and Fe0.45Ni0.10Al0.15Cr0.30)
were analyzed with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The microstructural analysis
reveals after 50 h of aging at 900°C the presence of dislocations around the precipitates of
alloy Fe0.53Ni0.10Al0.15Cr0.22. After 250 h of aging at 900°C the formation of a dislocation
network around the β’ precipitates of the Fe0.45Ni0.10Al0.15Cr0.30 alloy confirmed the partial
loss of coherency between precipitate and matrix.
Dilatometry was used for the determination of the impact of Cr content over the
precipitation temperature during continuous heating and cooling cycles. The dilatometric
analysis confirmed the observations of the diffusion couples, showing that the β’ phase is
stable at higher temperature when there is an increase in the Cr content. Also, a
displacement of the Curie point to lower temperatures with higher Cr content was observed.
This is attributed to the fact that the increase in Cr-Cr interactions lowers the capacity of
ferromagnetic ordering in the system. This phenomenon was also observed in alloys of the Fe-Cr system.
