The present study investigated whether maintenance of contingency-discrepant rule-following is more dependet upon the listener experimental history or upon his/her pre-experimental history, inferred from the listener´s responses to a questionnaire about inflexibility. Sixteen university students previously classified as high and low on a rigidity scale were exposed to a matching-to-sample procedure in which respondents pointed to one of three comparison stimuli. After the baseline in Session 1, the contingencies in Session 2 were changed in Session 3, whereas the contingencies in Session 3 were the same in Session 4, which began with a contingency-discrepant rule. In Session 2, pointing was established by contingencies in Condition I and by rules in Condition II: Regardless of the experimental condition, 6 of the 8 “flexible” participants ceased discrepant rule-following in Session 4. The systematic differences observed between performances of the classified flexible and unflexible, support the suggestion that individual differences generated by different pre-experiemental histories are variable related to maintenance or not the discrepant rule-following.o presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar se o comportamento de seguir regras discrepantes das contingências de reforço depende mais da história experimental do ouvinte ou da sua história préexperimental, inferida das respostas do ouvinte a um questionário sobre inflexibilidade. Dezesseis universitários, previamente classificados como flexíveis ou como inflexíveis, foram expostos a um procedimento de escolha segundo o modelo; a tarefa era apontar cada um dos três estímulos de comparação. A Sessão I era de linha de base. As contingências na Sessão 2 eram alteradas na Sessão 3, e as contingências na Sessão 3, eram mantidas inalteradas na Sessão 4, iniciada com a regra discrepante das contingências. Na Sessão 2, o apontar era estabelecido por contingências na Condição I e por regra na Condição 2. Independentemente da condição experimental, 6 dos 8 participantes flexíveis deixaram de seguir a regra discrepante na Sessão 4; e 7 dos 8 participantes inflexíveis mantiveram o seguimento da regra discrepante na Sessão 4. Os resultados sugerem que as diferenças sistemáticas observadas entre os desempenhos dos participantes flexíveis e inflexíveis apóiam a sugestão de que diferenças individuais geradas por diferentes histórias pré-experimentais são variáveis que podem estar relacionadas à manutenção, ou não, do seguimento de regras discrepantes das contingências.
