This monograph presents the analysis of democratic education in an alternative secondary education project as a process in constant construction, whose bases are found in the daily dynamics that question the work of teachers and student education. Thus, through an ethnographic approach, the practice of democracy is questioned beyond the institutional discourse, by tracing pedagogical practices and social relations among the actors that account for the real scope of a concept as complex and broad as this one.
Thus, the principles that make up democratic education, such as freedom, autonomy, participation and respect, allow the development of a reflective argument that makes visible its dynamic, heterogeneous and gradual nature in learning. Its practice influences academic and personal processes that do not go with the rhythm and homogenization of traditional education and society in general, making known the contributions, challenges and tensions it raises from alternative pedagogy. In this way, democratic education in this context derives in the consolidation of a particular political subjectivity among students, characterized by the interest in social transformation.
