Nis research deals with themes related to avoidance of deaths and reduction of traLc damage, focusing on urban/road design. TraLc is one of the major causes of death, considered by the World Health Organization a global epidemic. In order to meet one of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is to reduce at least half the number of traLc victims, the United Nations has launched the Decade of Actions for Road Safety 2011-2020, of which Brazil is a signatory. Starting from the notion that the infrastructure does not promote predictability, the objective of this work is to identify elements of road design that support users' expectations, facilitate the traLc task and increase the potential for cycling. It is thus investigated how design can contribute to the production of safe and sustainable transit. Experiences of studies on Self-Explaining Roads (SER) are collected; and an approach on SER is carried out by the application of a questionnaire with road users. Nis paper address design problems and solutions in order to make roads self-explaining and the data produced by the questionnaire reveal some clues about self-explaining design elements of roads; however, further studies are needed in order to obtain more conclusive results.
