Resumen
Pronunciation is often deprecated in English as a second language teaching, despite its importance. One should take into account, however, that there are aspects of pronunciation that are determinant for intelligibility among speakers and should not be ignored by the teacher. Therefore, school English classes should contemplate pronunciation together with other aspects of teaching. Thus, this paper intends to verify how pronunciation is discussed in textbooks of Brazilian public High School, which guide the teacher’s work in the classroom. This research paper will also anlyze how the approach to pronunciation in English is in the “Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCN)”2, the “Orientações Curriculares Nacionais” (OCN)3 and the 2012 edition of the “Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (PNLD)”4 – guide responsible for evaluating the textbooks which can be used in public schools. Furthermore, the textbooks approved by the abovementioned edition of this guide will also be here analyzed.
