Resumen
INTRODUCTION: The Barium Meal procedure is a fluoroscopic examination that is used to investigate pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract in children. To perform this examination, professionals remain inside the procedure room to position and immobilize the patient. Due to this fact, it is important to know the doses received by the professionals, since there are dose limits for each region of staff and to work in an optimized way, which is, taking into account the radiological protection and the diagnostic quality of the images. OBJECTIVES:To estimate, before and after the radiological protection optimization (through some modified parameters), the doses received by one professional in place of the lens.METHODOLOGY: Fourteen pairs of thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) were hang from the ceiling to the lens region of a professional. A humanoid phantom was used to simulate a pediatric patient. The doses, obtained by the TLDs, were verifies before and after the changes in the parameters of the procedure, suggested by the application of the optimization. RESULTS:It was observed that, after the optimization of the radiological protection the parameters were appropriate with those proposed by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). With the optimization, the dose received by the crystalline region was reduced in 46% and it was lower than the limit of 20mSv/year.CONCLUSIONS:It was observed that just changing some technical parameters of the examination, the occupational dose could the reduced to a value lower than the limit for the area.
