Mechanochemical processing of IrO2-Ta2O5: An alternative route for synthesizing Ir and Ir(Ta)O2 solid solution.

ThispaperdescribesastudyexploringmillingandsubsequentheattreatmentsofpureIrO2andTa2O5powders.ReactantsweremilledunderAratmosphereinaSPEX8000Dmill,withstructural,morphological,andcompositionalcharacterizations(duringmillingandaftersubsequentheattreatments)byX-raydiffraction,energy-dispersivespectroscopy,andtransmissionelectronmicroscopy.Electrochemicalstabilityofpowderswasevaluatedbyopencircuitpotential(OCP).ResultsshowedthatthemechanicalenergytransferredduringthisprocessinducesareactionbetweenIrO2andTa2O5,formingmetallicIrandIr(Ta)O2saturatedsolidsolution.Thestudyadditionallyshowsthatthisreactioncanbethermallyinducedwithpreviousmechanicalactivationofreactants.Electrochemicaleval-uationsofmilledpowdersimmersedinH2SO4solutionrevealedthatOCPshiftsnegativelywithincreasingmillingtime,approachingthatofpureIrat15hmilling
