Abstract
Background: Continuous cultures have been used since the 1950s in beer and wine fermentations due to their higher productivities compared to traditional batch systems; nevertheless, the tequila industry has not taken advantage of the possible improvements that continuous fermentations could offer. In this work, the effect of pH, aeration and feeding of nonsterilized medium, on the fermentative capability of two Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains (S1 and S2) cultured in continuous fermentation, using agave juice as the fermentation medium, were studied. Results: In continuous cultures, the control of the medium pH (set point at 4) did not have a significant effect on fermentation efficiency compared to fermentations in which the pH was not controlled (pH 2.5 0.3). Conversely, aeration of the cultures of both strains improved biomass production and consumption of reducing sugars and ammonium. The aeration also significantly augmented ethanol production only for S1 cultures (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the feeding of medium, either sterilized or not, did not show significant differences on the production of ethanol for S1 cultures. Higher concentrations of acetoin, succinic acid and diacetyl were found in the cultures fed with non-sterilized medium. Conclusions: Compared to S2, S1 has a better fermentative performance in continuous non-sterilized medium fermentations. Not controlling the pH during the cultures could prevent the possibility of microbial contamination as a result of the extreme medium acidity (pH 2.5 0.3). This work showed the possibility of scaling up agave juice continuous fermentation feeding non-sterilized medium with no control of pH. Jasso-Gastinel, C.F.",,"2006",,"Effect of preheating of stearates on the processing and post-processing thermal stability of poly(vinyl chloride) compounds, plasticized with di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), using several ratios of calcium/zinc stearates and DEHP/ESO is reported. The compounds were prepared as follows: (1) dry-blending the compound components, (2) pelletizing the dry-blend and (3) extruding the pellets to obtain a ribbon geometry. Processing stability was determined by: (a) mechanical characterization and (b) visual color comparison of extruded samples. Post-processing thermal stability was followed by: (a) measurement of HCl release from heated pellets and (b) color changes in heated ribbon samples. From a practical point of view, the preheating has a negligible effect on the initial color of formulations; except for the case of formulations without both ESO and CaSt2. However, the effect of the preheating on the post-processing thermal stability is strongly determined by the composition formulation. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The T-Student test was used for the comparison of means, where calves were divided into two groups of 14, one for each treatment. The body weight BW (kg), wither height WH (cm), body condition BC (1 to 5 scale), daily weight gain DWG (kg) and feed conversion FC (kg) was measured every 30 days. Results. Differences were found between treatments, where heifers fed with SCS showed better BC (3.12), FC (7.4) as compared to the CS treatment. No significant differences were found in terms of DWG (0.666 and 0.743 kg/d). Conclusions. Es usual que este problema se aborde con pruebas aproximadas del tipo ? y otras pruebas de independencia de resultados sucesivos. Pero estas pruebas, tienen entre otras limitantes, el hecho de que requieren muestras grandes. Como alternativa, en este trabajo se detalla una prueba bayesiana basada en el modelo multinomial. Además, para monitorear los resultados de este tipo de juego de azar y detectar en forma oportuna patrones y resultados no aleatorios, se propone la utilización de una carta de control geométrica. Se hace un breve estudio Monte Carlo para comprender mejor las características de la carta propuesta. Nuno-Donlucas, S.M.",,"2006",,"An analysis by differential scanning calorimetry, modulated differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicates that blends of poly(vinyl phenyl ketone) (PVPhK) and poly(4-vinyl phenol) (P4VPh) are miscible at ambient temperature. Miscibility, ascertained, is supported by the existence of a single glass transition for each composition of the PVPhK/P4VPh blends. The FTIR spectroscopy analysis demonstrates the formation of hydrogen bonds between carbonyl groups of PVPhK and hydroxyl groups of P4VPh. This specific interaction has a crucial role on the miscibility behavior of PVPhK/P4VPh blends. The evolution of the glass transition of the PVPhK, P4VPh, and its blends as a function of mixture composition shows negative deviations with to respect to the ideal mixing rule, and both Fox and Gordon-Taylor equations predict this behavior successfully.
