Possible gravitational radiation detection using the geometric phase of a light beam

Composites of postconsumer high-density polyethylene with agave fiber were prepared by singlescrew extrusion with azodicarbonamide as a foaming agent to increase the surface area; the composite pellets were coated with chitosan afterward. A chemical pretreatment was applied to the pellets to enhance the chitosan gel compatibility. The adsorption capacities of the composites coated with chitosan were evaluated for Cd(II) and Cu(II) removal from aqueous solutions. The coated composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to measure metal uptake in batch adsorption studies. The results of this study demonstrated the composites' ability to immobilize chitosan on their surfaces and their capacity to adsorb metal ions. The equilibrium isotherms for Cd(II) and Cu(II) adsorption on the chitosancoated composites were described by the Langmuir model. This material represents an attractive low-cost recycled material for adsorbing metal ions from polluted waters. Because this species is a priority for conservation in the reserve, the effects on its populations of the most common types of anthropogenic disturbance - slash-and-burn, and slash without subsequent burning - were investigated in three populations for 5 years. 2. The patterns of establishment and mortality were similar in all populations studied. Numbers of ears and fruits produced were significantly higher when disturbances were applied. 3. Because permanence is the most important stage in contributing to ?, the results suggest that the first genets to become established have an advantage over newly recruited plants. 4. When the two disturbance types were applied, ? was close to 1 or > 1. After the first disturbance, ? increased by almost 100%. In almost all situations, with or without disturbance, the persistence loops of Z. diploperennis are the most important life history pathways in the relative contribution to ?. In general, when ? increases, sexual growth loops also increase in importance, and persistence loops decrease. Changes in ? are not related to changes in vegetative growth loops. 5. ADH1B, ALDH2, and CYP2E1 have been considered candidate genes in alcohol-related diseases. Controversial results probably due to ethnic differences, among other factors, have been reported. Mexican Mestizos (MES) derive from the combination of indigenous, Spaniard, and African genes. Huichols (HUI) constitute an indigenous group from western Mexico with no racial admixture. We determined ADH1B*2, ALDH2*2, and CYP2E1*c2 allele frequencies in healthy HUI and MES from western Mexico. Lipid and hepatic profile were also carried out. METHODS: One hundred and one HUI and 331 MES subjects were studied. Genotype and allele frequency were assessed through polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism after DNA isolation from peripheral leukocytes. Commercial kits for lipid and hepatic determinations were used. RESULTS: Polymorphic allele distribution in HUI was: 0%ADH1B*2, 0.5%ALDH2*2, 51.5%CYP2E1*c2; in MES: 3.4%ADH1B*2, 0%ALDH2*2, 16.1%CYP2E1*c2. Frequency of ADH1B*2 was statistically (p < 0.001) lower in HUI than MES. CYP2E1*c2 polymorphic allele was significantly higher (p < 0.0001) in HUI than MES. Hepatic profile was normal in both groups. HUI showed a better lipid profile than MES independently of genotype. CONCLUSIONS: Huichols exhibited the highest CYP2E1*c2 allele frequency of the world documented up to this date; meanwhile, ADH1B*2 and ALDH2*2 were practically absent. This feature could be useful in the understanding of Mexican population gene composition, alcohol metabolism, and alcoholic liver disease development. However, further association studies are necessary. The heterogeneity of Mexican population was evidenced by the significantly different distribution of CYP2E1*c2 allele observed among different regions of the country. Lipid and hepatic values were not associated to genotype. Benz, B.F.",,"2001",,"One of the objectives of the Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve (Jalisco, México) is the conservation in situ of the teosinte Zea diploperennis Iltis, Doebley, Guzman & Pazzi. Zea diploperennis is perennial, shade intolerant and its 1-3 m shoots are architecturally similar to maize. Clonal growth is of the phalanx type. Genets are iteroparous (modules semelparous). The demography of seven module and genet populations was studied in seven sites representing three stages of old-field succession. Seven permanent one-meter-square plots were randomly established in each site. All genets initially present and those that became established during our study were mapped and labeled according to year of establishment The magnitude of demographic fluctuations was greater in module populations. Genet population dynamics followed a seasonal rhythm with a maximum population size obtained at the onset of the rainy season. A relation was documented between percent annual mortality of a cohort and its age: the younger the cohort, the greater the mortality. This was a statistically significant relationship, Y = [sin(-0.288x + 1.657)]2 (r = 0.92, p < 0.01), where is proportion annual mortality of genets and is the age of the cohort. The maximum rates of genet mortality occurred during the rainy season when population densities were greatest. As a consequence, we postulate that competition occurs principally during the rainy season. Linear relationships were observed between rate of population increase of genets versus old-field successional stage and soil type. Those areas with poor soil (Ultisol), degraded soil or soils with similar physical characteristics could be rehabilitated by introducing Z. diploperennis. For the beam travelling orthogonally to the direction of propagation of the gravitational wave from an observer and returning back after being reflected, this phase is shown to grow proportionally to L/? where L is the distance between the observer and reflecting system, and ? the characteristic wavelength of the gravitational wave packet (for light propagating parallel or antiparallel to the gravitational wave, the geometric phase shift is absent).
