Trust theory of testimony and social ontology: an analysis of the social and epistemic normativity of giving testimony

Abstract

The trust theory of testimony is an inflection point in the epistemology of testimony because surpasses the debate between reductionists and non-reductionist about epistemic justification and the acquisition of knowledge by testimony. To do that, this theory collects features of both reductionism and non-reductionism postulating that testimony is an epistemic source by itself (non-reductionism) but considering the importance of non-epistemic factors like trust to rationalize the practice of giving testimony (reductionism). This leads the trust theory of testimony to give a genealogical explanation of the social normativity of trust. However, due to the lack of the conceptual tools needed to characterize the role of trust in our society today, that kind of explanation fails to delve into aspects that challenge the theory (like the relationship between expertise and testimony) and that would indicate that, in principle, the trust theory of testimony is not suitable for overcoming the debate between reductionists and anti-reductionists. Considering this, in this thesis, I propose that the trust theory of testimony is enough to explain the practice of testimony but not an exhaustive characterization of it. To do this, I resort to John Searle's social ontology to obtain the conceptual tools needed to give a characterization of the current role of trust in our society with the porpoise of making a link between the epistemology of testimony and social ontology. Thus, I will show that epistemology of testimony, due to the dual nature of its study object, requires others disciplines to describe the non-testimonially grounded elements which allow us to describe the epistemic normativity of the practice of testimony.

La trust theory of testimony suscita un punto de inflexión para la epistemología del testimonio en tanto que permite superar el debate entre reduccionistas y antireduccionistas en torno a la justificación y adquisición de conocimiento a partir de testimonios. Para ello, esta teoría recoge los aspectos de ambas posturas señalando que el testimonio es una fuente epistémica por derecho propio (antireduccionismo), pero aceptando que se deben tener en cuenta factores no-testimonialmente fundados como la confianza para racionalizar el intercambio testimonial (reduccionismo). Esto conduce a la trust theory of testimony a explicar genealógicamente la normatividad social de la confianza para luego poder dar cuenta de la normatividad epistémica del testimonio. Sin embargo, debido a la carencia de herramientas conceptuales adecuadas para caracterizar cuál es el rol de la confianza actualmente en nuestra sociedad, dicha explicación no logra profundizar en aspectos que ponen en jaque a la teoría (como la relación entre pericia y testimonio) y que indicarían que, en principio, la trust theory of testimony no es apta para superar el debate entre reduccionistas y antireduccionistas.

Considerando esa dificultad, en esta tesis proponemos que la trust theory of testimony es suficiente para explicar el intercambio testimonial aunque no exhaustiva respecto de su caracterización. Para dar cuenta de ello, recurriremos a la ontología social de John Searle para adquirir las herramientas conceptuales que nos permitan dar cuenta del rol actual de la confianza en sociedad con el fin de generar una complementación entre la epistemología del testimonio y la ontología social. De esta manera, pretendemos mostrar que la epistemología de testimonio, debido a la naturaleza dual de su objeto de estudio, requiere de otras disciplinas para los elementos no testimonialmente fundados que permiten posteriormente dar cuenta de la normatividad epistémica del intercambio testimonial.
