Aquatic organisms such as red algae and cyanobacteria have a highly efficient light-gathering protein system called Phycobilisome. Phycobilisomes of red algae are composed of Phycobiliproteins (PBP) such as Allophycocyanin (APC), Phycocyanin (PC) and Phycoerythrin (PE), and binding or linker proteins that help in the assembly and conduction of solar energy. The abundance of red algae in nature, their potential for cultivation, and the unique spectroscopic characteristics of these Phycobiliproteins make them excellent candidates for semiconductor sensitization in DSSC devices.
This is why the objective of this work was to evaluate and optimize the use of stabilized Phycobiliproteins and Phycobilisomes, obtained from Gracilaria chilensis, as sensitizers for DSSC.
The Phycobiliproteins of G. chilensis were extracted and purified with an analytical degree of purity, with an extraction yield with respect to the wet weight of algae of 176 mg of Phycoerythrin / Kg of algae, 154 mg of Phycocyanin / Kg of algae and 4 mg of Allophycocyanin / Kg of seaweed.
The sensitization or adsorption of PBPs on the photoelectrodes was evaluated by comparing their absorption spectrum (UV-Visible) in solid. Tris HCl buffer pH 7.0 favors the absorption of PBPs on the TiO2 semiconductor, compared to phosphate buffer pH 7.0.
After sensitization, the solar cells were assembled and their photoelectric parameters were measured in a solar simulator. The conversion efficiency obtained for PE, PC and APC, without optimization, was of the order of 0.020%.
The optimization of the manufactured DSSCs was focused on improving the adsorption of PBPs on the photoelectrodes. For these, the surface of the TiO2 semiconductor was functionalized with molecules of Poly-L-Lysine, Amino propyl trimethoxylan (APTMS), Glutarardehyde or a combination of the latter two. The conversion efficiency achieved with the solar cells assembled with the photoelectrodes functionalized with APTMS molecules, was 0.176% for APC, 0.137% for PC, 0.140% for PE and 0.042% for non-sensitized solar cells. Improving the efficiency obtained previously.
Another important factor in the performance of a DSSC is the thermostability of the sensitizer used. Previous reports have shown that mesophilic organism PBPs are sensitive to temperatures above 50 ° C, therefore, achieving the thermal stability of PBPs is desired. The optimization of this factor was evaluated with PC, through its possibly intra-chain crosslinking, with formaldehyde, managing to increase the melting temperature (Tm) from 56 ° C to 80 ° C, determined at 280 nm. Solar cells assembled with thermally stabilized PC showed a conversion efficiency of 0.12%, lower than that obtained with unstabilized PC (0.160%). Although the conversion efficiency achieved with solar cells assembled with thermally stabilized PC, will be slightly lower than that obtained with unstabilized PC, this can be improved in future studies. The conversion efficiencies obtained with PBP-sensitized solar cells are in the range previously reported for other photosynthetic protein complexes. The surface functionalization of TiO2 and the thermal stabilization of PC by crosslinking with FA are an approach to the design and optimization of biohybrid photovoltaic devices.
