Fulfilling this task allows scientific knowledge and understanding to reach the general population. In addition, such outreach can inform different social sectors, including government institutions, which are responsible for making decisions about scientific and technological resources. The Institute of Neurobiology (INB) at UNAM, aware of this need, actively participates in scientific and cultural education, supporting programs such as Brain Awareness Week, an annual event supported by neuroscientists worldwide. For one week each March, the INB opens its doors to students, teachers, parents, and all who have an interest in how the brain works. In this paper, we review aspects related to the origin and development of Brain Awareness Week in Mexico and the world, and describe the contribution of the INB to this celebration
