Resumen
Military spending in a country can be influenced by strategic, geopolitical, economic, cultural and social determinants, among others. The purpose of this study is to construct an empirical model to determine the behavior of military spending in 2017 as a response to some economic and social variables. Data on military spending in 2017 were obtained from the SIPRI database. Secondary data sources from the IMF, WHO and ILO were used to obtain information on the independent variables. The high value of certain correlations suggested eliminating some of the initially selected independent variables. From a convenience sample of 91 countries and secondary data covering seven variables, the examination of the influence of the selected determinants on the behavior of military spending is supported by a multiple regression equation. The results showed that "Population" (p = 0.000) and "health spending" (p = 0.000) had a significant positive impact on military spending, countering in some way the argument that military expenditure has inverse signaling for the population welfare.
