Empatía, inteligencia emocional y motivaciones para estudiar medicina en estudiantes de medicina de una universidad privada

Abstract

El objetivo general fue establecer la relación entre la empatía, las dimensiones de la inteligencia emocional y los dominios de las motivaciones para estudiar la carrera de Medicina en estudiantes de Medicina de una universidad privada. El diseño fue no experimental, transversal y correlacional no causal. El tipo de muestreo fue no probabilístico intencional y la muestra estuvo conformada por 249 estudiantes, con edades entre 17 y 27 años, que cursaban el 1ro. al 7mo. año de Medicina en una universidad privada con sede en Lima y filiales en Ica y Chincha. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron el Test de Empatía Cognitiva y Afectiva – TECA, la Escala Rasgo de Metaconocimientos sobre Estados Emocionales (TMMS-24) y la Escala de Motivaciones para estudiar Medicina (MEM-12). Se encontró asociación positiva y significativa entre la Empatía, las dimensiones de la Inteligencia emocional (IE) y los dominios de las Motivaciones para estudiar Medicina en estudiantes de dicha carrera de una universidad privada, presentando una magnitud de asociación moderada entre Empatía y Atención y Claridad, y una magnitud de asociación fuerte con Reparación; en tanto que la asociación entre Empatía y el Dominio social/altruista (DSA) presentó una magnitud moderada y con el Dominio económico/prestigio (DEP) una magnitud débil. Por otro lado, respecto a las dimensiones de la IE, todas tuvieron asociación positiva, significativa y moderada con DSA, mientras que la asociación fue positiva, significativa y de magnitud débil entre DEP y Atención y Reparación, y una magnitud de asociación moderada entre DEP y Claridad. Las implicancias de los resultados han sido discutidas.

The main objective was to establish the relationship between empathy, the dimensions of the emotional intelligence and the domains of the motivations to study medicine in

medical students from a private university. The design was non-experimental, cross- sectional and non-causal correlational. The type of sample was intentional non- probabilistic, and the sample consisted of 249 students, aged between 17 and 27, enrolled

in the 1st. to the 7th year of medicine in a private university based in Lima with branches in Ica and Chincha. The instruments used were the Cognitive and Affective Empathy Test - TECA, the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24) and the Scale regarding reasons for studying Medicine Scale (MEM-12). A positive and significant association was found between Empathy, the dimensions of Emotional Intelligence and the domains of Motivation to study medicine in medical students of a private university, presenting a magnitude of moderate association between Empathy and Attention and Clarity, and a magnitude of strong association with Repair; while the association between Empathy and the Social/Altruistic Domain (DSA) presented a moderate magnitude and with the Economic/Prestige Domain (DEP) showed a weak magnitude. On the other hand, regarding the dimensions of EI, all had a positive, significant, and moderate association with DSA, while the association was positive, significant, and of a weak magnitude between DEP and Attention and Repair, and a moderate magnitude of association between DEP and Clarity. The implications of the results have been discussed.
