The research in question deals with the survey and studies of office materials used in primary schools, in the regions of the former North of Goiás, (currently Tocantins) in the 19th century. The main objective of the research was to identify and analyze the documentary records referring to public primary education as a way of understanding the dynamics of the functioning of schools in some locations in northern Goiás. It used as research material the manuscript documents from the Historical Archive of Goiás (Goiânia), the “Museu das Bandeiras” (City of Goiás), and the online collection provided by the Network of Studies in the History of Education of Goiás (REHEG). The reading methodology was based on studies of school material culture, on the understanding of the relationship of school objects and practices used in the teaching process of the locations under study. The procedure consisted of identifying material lists requested by teachers, parish inspectors, and/or literary delegates, as well as municipalities. Using a cataloging script, the type of document and date, location, number of folders and/or subfolders were identified, depending on the origin of the document. Visualizing the documents required meticulous work, dealing with the material that was sometimes incomprehensible and even illegible, especially the images of the handwritten documents. Finally, an approximation to the material conditions of operation of schools and elementary education allowed the expansion of studies on the region in the context of historiography.O trabalho em questão trata do levantamento e estudos dos materiais de expediente utilizados nas escolas primárias, nas regiões do antigo Norte de Goiás, (atual Tocantins) no século XIX. A pesquisa teve como objetivo principal identificar e analisar os registros documentais referentes à instrução pública primária como forma de entendimento à dinâmica de funcionamento das escolas em algumas localidades do norte goiano. Utilizou como material de pesquisa os documentos manuscritos provenientes do Arquivo Histórico de Goiás (Goiânia), do Museu das Bandeiras (Cidade de Goiás), e do acervo on-line disposto pela Rede de Estudos de História da Educação de Goiás (REHEG). A metodologia de leitura baseou-se nos estudos da cultura material escolar, na compreensão da relação dos objetos e práticas escolares utilizados no processo de ensino das localidades em estudo. O procedimento consistiu em identificar as listas de materiais solicitadas pelos professores, inspetores paroquiais, e ou delegados literários, assim como os municípios. Com o uso de um roteiro de catalogação realizou-se a identificação do tipo de documento e data, local, número de pastas e ou subpastas, a depender da origem do documento. A visualização dos documentos exigiu um trabalho minucioso, no trato do material por vezes incompreensível e até mesmo ilegível, em especial, as imagens dos documentos manuscritos. Por fim, uma aproximação às condições materiais de funcionamento das escolas e do ensino elementar permitiu ampliar os estudos sobre a região no âmbito da historiografia.
