In the last years, epidemiological research in oral health has shown a decrease in the prevalence of caries and periodontal diseases and an increasing number of dental malocclusion problems. These results show an epidemiological transformation of oral health and so it’s necessary to pay more attention to the problems of occlusion, thus implementing orthodontic procedures in the Health Unic System. The objective of this study is to realize a literature review regarding the implementation of preventive orthodontics in the Health Unic System. Malocclusion problems in Brazil seem to affect 50% to 85% of children and teenagers and 60% to 90% of adults and despite the high prevalence of problems related to orthodontics, few successful experiences within SUS were found in the literature reports, where even with the implantation of the Brasil Sorridente Program and with the insertion of orthodontic procedures in the list of actions covered by the system, there isn’t a considerable volume of preventive and / or interceptive actions in this specialty and not even clinical protocols or screening systems. However, internationally, there are reports of successful experiences and the use of indexes and screening tests carried out in public health, where not only the diagnosis, but the orthodontic treatment is also part of the reality of public health in these countries. A search was carried out in the databases PUBMED, Lilacs, Medline, Scopus and in gray literature (Google Scholar) using the following terms: “Orthodontics + SUS”, “Orthodontics + public”, “Maxillary orthopedics + SUS”, “Maxillary orthopedics + public”. The types of studies included were bibliographic reviews on the subject in Portuguese.Nos últimos anos, as pesquisas epidemiológicas em saúde bucal, vem demonstrando a diminuição da prevalência de cáries e das doenças periodontais e o crescente número de problemas de má oclusão dentária. Estes resultados exibem uma transformação epidemiológica da saúde bucal e por isso torna-se necessária uma maior atenção em relação aos problemas de oclusão, implementando assim procedimentos ortodônticos no sistema único de saúde. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão da literatura a respeito da implementação da Ortodontia no Sistema Único de Saúde. Os problemas de má oclusão no Brasil parecem atingir de 50% a 85% das crianças e adolescentes e de 60% a 90% de adultos e apesar da alta prevalência de problemas relacionados à ortodontia, poucas experiências exitosas dentro do SUS foram encontradas nos relatos da literatura, onde mesmo com a implantação do Programa Brasil Sorridente e com a inserção de procedimentos ortodônticos no rol de ações cobertos pelo sistema, não há um volume considerável de ações preventivas e/ou interceptativas nesta especialidade e nem mesmo protocolos clínicos ou sistemas de triagem. Porém, internacionalmente há o relato de experiências exitosas e o emprego de índices e exames de triagem realizados em saúde coletiva, onde não só o diagnóstico, mas o tratamento ortodôntico também faz parte da realidade da saúde pública nesses países. Foi realizada uma pesquisa nas bases de dados PUBMED, Lilacs, Medline, Scopus e na literatura cinzenta (Google Scholar) utilizando-se os seguintes termos: “Ortodontia + SUS”, “Ortodontia + pública”, “Ortopedia maxilares + SUS”, “Ortopedia maxilares + pública”. Os tipos de estudos incluídos foram revisões bibliográficas voltadas ao assunto no idioma português.
