The present thesis seeks to make a hermeneutic exercise that contributes to the apprehension of the dynamics of the relations between the religious phenomenon and the public space. For this purpose, as an empirical delimitation, we will use the movement known as Dutch neocalvinist that started in the 19th century and which has the main exponent and articulator in the person of Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920). Abraham Kuyper, Dutch polymath, based on the idea that Calvinism is endowed with the potential to become an integral worldview that impels the Christian to engage and insert himself in the social world and in all other spheres of human existence, elaborated a solid worldview (Weltanschauung) or world-and-life system centered on concepts such as divine sovereignty, the sovereignty of the spheres of creation, the common grace that is distributed to humanity and the radical antithesis that exists between Christian and non-Christian thought. The Kuyperian view provided the introduction of a theology focused not only on piety, but on a pluralist, democratic articulation, aiding the pressing social causes of the poor and those in need of help and justice, of human freedom and dignity as the fruit of the divine image.A presente tese busca fazer um exercício hermenêutico que contribua para a apreensão da dinâmica das relações entre o fenômeno religioso e o espaço público. Para tanto, a título de delimitação empírica iremos nos valer do movimento denominado neocalvinista neerlandês iniciado no século XIX e que tem na pessoa de Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) seu principal expoente e articulador. Abraham Kuyper, polímata neerlandês, pautado na ideia de o calvinismo ser dotado de potencial para tornar-se uma visão de mundo integral que impulsione o cristão a engajar-se e inserir-se no mundo social e em todas as demais esferas da existência humana, elaborou uma sólida cosmovisão (Weltanschauung) ou sistema de mundo e de vida centrado em conceitos como a soberania divina, a soberania das esferas da criação, a graça comum que é distribuída à humanidade e a antítese radical que há entre o pensamento cristão e não cristão. A visão kuyperiana proporcionou a introdução de uma teologia voltada não somente para a piedade, mas para uma articulação pluralista, democrática, auxiliadora das causas sociais prementes dos pobres e dos que necessitam de auxílio e justiça, da liberdade e da dignidade humanas enquanto fruto da imagem divina.CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
