| dc.description | The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the conception of the epicurean and stoic
philosophies in the book II of the work Tusculan Disputations, of Cicero, whose theme is the
pain (dolor): its concept, its moral valuation and the prescriptions for resisting it. Firstly, it
was made a study about the aspects of the work, of the author and of the period.
Understanding the writing and translating styles, since Cicero is identified as one of the main
translators of greek philosophy to latin, as well as the meaning of the theme for the set of the
work, for the author’s public and private life and also for the roman hellenistic philosophy in
contrast with the greek hellenistic philosophy is necessary for a fuller analysis of the book,
how intended. Then, it was made an exposition of the theses and argumentations exposed by
Cicero along the book II, emphasizing the two philosopher with which he establishes a direct
dialogue, namely, Epicurus and Zeno of Citium, with the objective of presenting which
conception the roman thinker expresses for each one, that is, presenting the “Epicurus of
Cicero” and the “Zeno of Cicero”, to understand what is his own conception about the theme.
δastly, the Arpinate’s conception of these philosophers was analyzed in contrast with other
conceptions, trying to understand the social and political reasons for the acceptation or
rejection of those thinkers and their respective theories in ancient Rome. | |

| dc.description | Esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar a concepção das filosofias epicurista e estoica no
livro II da obra Discussões Tusculanas, de Marco Túlio Cícero, cujo tema é a dor (dolor): o
seu conceito, a sua valoração moral e as prescrições de resistência a ela. Primeiramente, foi
realizado um estudo sobre os aspectos da obra, do autor e da época. Entender o estilo de
escrita e de tradução, uma vez que Cícero é identificado como um dos principais tradutores da
filosofia grega para o latim, assim como o significado do tema tanto para o conjunto da obra,
quanto para vida privada e pública do autor e também para a filosofia helenística romana em
contraste com a filosofia helenística grega faz-se necessário para uma análise mais completa
do livro, como se pretende. Em seguida, foi feita uma exposição das teses e argumentações
expostas por Cícero ao longo do livro II, enfatizando os dois filósofos com os quais ele
estabelece um diálogo direto, a saber, Epicuro e Zenão de Cítio, com o objetivo de apresentar
qual a concepção que o filósofo romano tinha de cada um, isto é, apresentar o “Epicuro de
Cícero” e o “Zenão de Cícero”, para entender qual a sua própria concepção acerca do tema.
Por fim, a concepção do Arpinate acerca destes filósofos foi analisada em contraste com
outras concepções tentando entender os motivos políticos e sociais da aceitação ou rejeição
daqueles filósofos e respectivas teorias na Roma antiga. | |
