The contemporary rural space needs to be considered in all its diversity. The non-agricultural activities, particularly those that involve leisure and tourism, have become increasingly important and may contribute to the local economy dynamics. The aim in this work was to identify the effects of tourism on income and job generation in the rural space. The basis of the qualitative research was a case study in São Martinho, a city in Santa Catarina state. Semi-structured interviews were done with the ten people responsible for the tourism enterprises in the district’s rural area. It was noticed that the resources originating from tourism were responsible for most of the entrepreneurs’ family revenue, contributing to an improvement in their lifestyle. There was, in the properties open for visitation, a restructuring process in which the activities related to tourism started to gain priority. The tourism-related jobs created were evaluated as meaningful.O espaço rural contemporâneo precisa ser considerado em toda a sua diversidade, sendo que as atividades não agrícolas, em especial as que envolvem o lazer e o turismo, ganham em importância e podem contribuir para a dinamização da economia local. Objetivou-se neste trabalho identificar os efeitos do turismo no espaço rural em relação à geração de renda e emprego. A pesquisa qualitativa teve como base um estudo de caso realizado em São Martinho no Estado de Santa Catarina. Foram feitas entrevistas semi-estruturadas com os dez responsáveis pelos empreendimentos de turismo no espaço rural do município. Verificou-se que os recursos provenientes do turismo respondiam pela maior parte da receita familiar destes, contribuindo para a melhoria em seus níveis de vida. Houve, nas propriedades abertas à visitação, um processo de refuncionalização, em que a realização das atividades relacionadas ao turismo passou a ter prioridade. Pôde-se também avaliar como significativo os empregos criados a partir da atividade turística.
