The family farming has notorious diversity of social forms, organizational and production, interfering in the pretension to characterize it in the Minas Gerais State, equally diverse in its territory, in its economy and culture. It sought to identify patterns that characterize this segment in its asymmetry and distinctive elements, in this area, using the data from the Agriculture Census of 2006 to assess their composition and distribution among the Minas Gerais municipalities, aim to identify its profile and its contribution to economic and social State development. This is an exploratory study of quantitative nature, which are used multivariate analysis techniques of Factor Analysis and Cluster Analysis. The results show that distinct features mark the family farming in related cities of Minas Gerais, mainly with socioeconomic conditions, which therefore implies alternate realities in the municipalities. This is perhaps the greatest contribution of the work since explaining the differences existing among the municipalities and grouping them together homogeneous, the results presented here may contribute to a better understanding of the family farming in Minas Gerais.A agricultura familiar tem notória diversidade de formas sociais, organizativas e de produção, interferindo na pretensão de caracterizá-la no Estado de Minas Gerais, igualmente diverso em seu território, em sua economia e cultura. A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo a identificação de padrões caracterizadores deste segmento em suas assimetrias e elementos distintivos, neste território, valendo-se dos dados constantes do Censo Agropecuário de 2006 para avaliar sua composição e distribuição entre os municípios mineiros, visando identificar seu perfil e sua contribuição para o desenvolvimento econômico e social do estado. Quanto a metodologia, trata-se de um estudo exploratório, de cunho quantitativo, em que são usadas duas técnicas estatísticas multivariadas, análise fatorial e análise de clusters. Os resultados apontam que características distintas marcam a agricultura familiar nas cidades mineiras relacionadas, principalmente, com as condições socioeconômicas, o que, consequentemente, implica em realidades alternativas nos municípios. Essa é, talvez, a maior contribuição do trabalho uma vez que explicitando as diferenciações existentes entre os municípios e agrupando-os em conjunto homogêneos, os resultados aqui apresentados poderão contribuir para uma melhor compreensão da agricultura familiar em Minas Gerais.
