This article was developed from a course taken at the Graduate Program in Society Sciences at the Federal University of Western Pará - UFOPA, where aspects of the ethnographic study and its use in field research, mainly anthropological, were discussed. . It was then that in an attempt to answer the questions: how is the preparation of a school band, both in its technical-musical and social aspect, perceived by the eyes of a third party? What kind of environment does a school band offer its students? What relationships are developed in this environment? This work intends to collaborate with the understanding of this musical segment and with future researchers who are interested in the theme. Therefore, this research proposed to investigate the socio-musical environment of a school band through an ethnographic experience, in which the preparation and rehearsals were accompanied, as well as the performance in the III Concert of the Music Band of Escola Deputado Ubaldo Corrêa in city of Santarém / PA. With this research it became clear the involvement and social meaning that this practice makes possible, and yet, there are aspects that can only be felt if witnessed; aspects that are also difficult to describe, perhaps due to the fact that the “being there” by Geertz (1998), in this case, does not refer to a place, but to a feeling of the atmosphere provided by the moment and the sound.Este artigo foi desenvolvido a partir de uma disciplina cursada no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Sociedade da Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará – UFOPA, onde foram abordados aspectos do estudo etnográfico e seu uso nas pesquisas de campo de cunho, principalmente, antropológico. Foi então que em busca de responder as questões: de que forma a preparação de uma banda escolar, tanto em seu aspecto técnico-musical quanto social, é percebida pelo olhar de um terceiro? Que tipo de ambiente uma banda escolar oferece aos seus? Quais relações são desenvolvidas nesse ambiente? Este trabalho pretende colaborar com o entendimento desse segmento musical e com futuros pesquisadores que se interessam pelo tema. Diante disso, esta pesquisa propôs-se a investigar o ambiente sócio musical de uma banda escolar através de uma experiência etnográfica, na qual foram acompanhadas a preparação e ensaios, bem como, a performance no III Concerto da Banda de Música da Escola Deputado Ubaldo Corrêa na cidade de Santarém/PA. Com essa pesquisa ficou claro o envolvimento e significado social que essa prática possibilita, e ainda, existem aspectos que somente podem ser sentidos se presenciados; aspectos esses que também são difíceis de descrever, talvez pelo fato de que o “being there” de Geertz (1998), nesse caso, não se refira a um lugar, mas a um sentir da atmosfera proporcionada pelo momento e pelo som.
