dc.descriptionThe objective of the article is to analyze the process of construction of journalistic social imaginary carried out by the American press during the first months of 1922 against the imminent arbitration that the president of that country, Warren Harding, would lead to solve the border conflict between Chile and Peru, derived from the War of the Pacific (1879-1883), known by the name of the Tacna and Arica issue. For this, the study prepares a qualitative content analysis methodology that allows us to distinguish some structural elements of the published news and others directly related to the words used by the journalistic texts that, linked together, allowed the emergence of discourses on the South American dispute and the role that The United States should play. The sample on which this analysis was carried out is made up of 108 news items collected from 26 newspapers from different US cities. The most relevant conclusions highlight, first, the importance of the press in the construction of journalistic social imaginary about the Chilean-Peruvian border conflict, representing it as a risk to the stability of South America and, secondly, and as an extension of the foregoing, they characterize the production of differential national identities towards the participating States in the search for a peaceful settlement.
dc.descriptionEl objetivo del artículo es analizar el proceso de construcción del imaginario social periodístico llevado a cabo por la prensa estadounidense durante los primeros meses de 1922 frente al inminente arbitraje que encabezaría el presidente de ese país, Warren Harding, para solucionar el conflicto limítrofe entre Chile y Perú, derivado de la Guerra del Pacífico (1879-1883), conocida con el nombre de Cuestión Tacna y Arica. Para ello, el estudio elabora una metodología cualitativa de análisis de contenido que permite distinguir algunos elementos estructurales de las noticias publicadas y otros directamente relacionados con las palabras utilizadas por los textos periodísticos que, enlazados entre sí, permitieron el surgimiento de discursos sobre la disputa sudamericana. y el papel que debe jugar Estados Unidos. La muestra sobre la que se ha realizado este análisis está compuesta por 108 noticias recogidas de 26 periódicos de distintas ciudades de Estados Unidos. Las conclusiones más relevantes destacan, en primer lugar, la importancia de la prensa en la construcción del imaginario social periodístico sobre el conflicto fronterizo chileno-peruano, representándolo como un riesgo para la estabilidad de América del Sur y, en segundo lugar, y como una extensión de lo anterior. caracterizan la producción de identidades nacionales diferenciales hacia los Estados participantes en la búsqueda de una solución pacífica.
