dc.descriptionThis article examines the role that a considerable amount of people in society played in maintaining public security in Peru between 1785 and 1835. During this period the authorities sought to encourage the active participation of a large part of the population in said function due to the inexistence or shortage of police force. In this sense, we argue that a scenario was configured in which, in general lines, there was no clear division between State and society in relation to the preservation of public safety and that, therefore, local powers had a wide margin of action to direct the fulfillment of these duties.
dc.descriptionEste artículo examina el papel que jugó una cantidad considerable de personas de la sociedad en el mantenimiento de la seguridad pública en el Perú entre 1785 y 1835. Durante este período las autoridades buscaron incentivar la participación activa de gran parte de la población en dicha función debido a la inexistencia o escasez de fuerza policial. En este sentido, argumentamos que se configuró un escenario en el que, en líneas generales, no existía una división clara entre Estado y sociedad en relación con la preservación de la seguridad pública y que, por tanto, los poderes locales tenían un amplio margen de acción para dirigir el cumplimiento de estos deberes.
