dc.descriptionThis article analyzes the three main mining towns that predated and coexisted with the Chu-quicamata mine and company town in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries: Punta de Rieles, Placilla and Banco Drummond. The urban developments that emerged around cop-per mines as mining growth exploded in the last decades of the nineteenth century show how unique social dynamics developed in a rapidly restructured productive, labor, and sociocultural environment. Using descriptions of the settlements from the local press and writings from the period, this paper explores the tensions, regulations and resistance that ensued from interactions between the towns, the industrial mine and new company town, and the mining company.
dc.descriptionEste artículo analiza los tres principales pueblos mineros que precedieron y coexistieron con el pueblo minero y de empresa Chu-quicamata a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX: Punta de Rieles, Placilla y Banco Drummond. Los desarrollos urbanos que surgieron alrededor de las minas de cobre a medida que el crecimiento minero explotó en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX muestran cómo se desarrollaron dinámicas sociales únicas en un entorno productivo, laboral y sociocultural rápidamente reestructurado. Utilizando descripciones de los asentamientos de la prensa local y escritos de la época, este artículo explora las tensiones, regulaciones y resistencias que surgieron de las interacciones entre los pueblos, la mina industrial y el nuevo pueblo de la empresa, y la empresa minera.
