O cientista social alemão Emilio Willems residiu dezoito anos no Brasil, onde se tornou professor de Antropologia na Universidade de São Paulo (USP) e de Antropologia Social e Sociologia na Escola Livre de Sociologia e Política de São Paulo (ELSP). Aqui desenvolveu estudos sobre assimilação, aculturação, imigração e mudança sociocultural, por exemplo, sendo até hoje referência importante sobre esses temas, especialmente os estudos que têm as populações rurais como objeto de investigação. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar alguns aspectos da produção intelectual de Willems, tendo o estudo “Cunha. Tradição e transição em uma cultura rural do Brasil (1947)”, pioneiro entre os chamados estudos de comunidade no Brasil, como eixo para a discussão sobre a realização desses estudos e seu papel na história das Ciências Sociais no país. Assim, procura-se compreender a importância das investigações sobre mudança social na produção sociológica no país e a influência de Emilio Willems nas interpretações sobre a sociedade brasileira no contexto das mudanças econômicas, políticas e sociais em curso entre as décadas de 1940 e 1960.The German social scientist Emilio Willems lived in Brazil for eighteen years, where he became professor of Anthropology at the University of São Paulo (USP) and of Social Anthropology and Sociology at the Free School of Sociology and Politics of São Paulo (ELSP). Here he developed studies on assimilation, acculturation, immigration and sociocultural change, for example, and is still an important reference on these themes, especially studies that have rural populations as the object of investigation. The objective of this work is to present some aspects of the production intellectual of Willems, having the study Cunha. Tradition and transition in a culture rural do Brasil (1947), a pioneer among the so-called community studies in Brazil, as an axis for the discussion about the accomplishment of these studies and their role in the history of Social Sciences in the country. Thus, we seek to understand the importance of investigations on social change in sociological production in the country and the influence of Emilio Willems in the interpretations of Brazilian society in the context of economic, political and social changes taking place between the 1940s and 1960s.
