The exercise of the right to autonomy is one of the most important elements of the principle of self-determination of indigenous peoples and is interconnected with the other human rights of indigenous peoples. Recent documents produced by the international mechanisms that protect indigenous peoples and by the academic literature that studies the subject are reviewed in a way that allows us to bring some important considerations on the subject and to frame the Colombian case. There are different models in the exercise of the right to autonomy. Each indigenous people in the world has different worldviews and ways of exercising it, depending on the cultural, social, economic and state contexts in which they find themselves. However, some common characteristics, challenges and problems can be identified.El ejercicio de la autonomía es uno de los derechos más importantes de los pueblos indígenas y está interconectado con los otros derechos humanos de los pueblos indígenas. En este artículo se revisan documentos recientes producidos por los mecanismos internacionales que amparan a los pueblos indígenas y por la literatura académica que estudia el tema de una forma que nos permita traer unas consideraciones importantes y enmarcar el caso colombiano. Aunque hay diferentesmodelos en el ejercicio del derecho a la autonomía y cada pueblo indígena del mundo tiene diferentes cosmovisiones y formas en su ejercicio, dependiendo de los contextos culturales, sociales, económicos y estatales en los cuales se encuentran, se pueden identificar algunas características, retos y problemáticas comunes.
