Abstract

The following undergraduate project begins with the concern of preserving the material representation of the memory of a labor that marked an era in the tobacco industry in the municipality of Barichara, Santander. Over the years, this building's industrial use has been left behind due to various events, relegating the vibrant life that once revolved around it to the past. Consequently, it has become an unused space that falls into deterioration and disconnects from its surroundings due to the current lack of attention. The idea of an abandoned building generally does not evoke favor, but alternatives exist, such as architectural rehabilitation, which offers a second life to these properties. The memory of a symbolically significant building is preserved within the materiality of the structure and its spaces. By adapting it to a new use, attention is not only given to the building itself, but also to the context that surrounds it. By identifying the local population and users, their traditions and activities that have been carried out for years are highlighted, leading to the development of an architectural program that adequately responds to the dynamics of the surrounding area. Taking advantage of the open spaces of the industrial warehouses, a series of criteria are implemented for the development of a proposal for a cultural center for the municipality of Barichara.
