Resumen
Introduction: Keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD), keratoglobus and post-refractive surgery progressive corneal ectasia should be classified as "ectatic diseases". Keratoconus is characterized by progressive corneal thinning and protrusion that leads to an exaggerated increase in its curvature that generally occurs asymmetrically leading to astigmatic defects. In Colombia there are few studies on the prevalence of keratoconus, this being a condition that, if not treated, can cause visual impairment, affecting the patient's quality of life. Objective: To clinically characterize the cases of keratoconus in an ophthalmology clinic specialized in cornea of the Cali ophthalmology clinic from January 2015 to December 2021. Study design: Observational descriptive retrospective cross-sectional Method: Review of medical records of patients seen for the first time in a private office of the Cali ophthalmology clinic, the estimated sample calculation was 263 histories. Results: The presence of keratoconus in the male sex is statistically significant, coinciding with the existing bibliography. Corneal crosslinking is one of the most used and safe treatments in the management of keratoconus. Conclusions: The posterior elevation map is key to making an early diagnosis of keratoconus. It is suggested to expand the research to multicenter studies.
